The Summit's Opening Plenary Panel Takes Shape
December 1, 2006 8:38 AM
The Summit's opening plenary panel is taking shape. The panel discussion, which will focus on preparing students for new challenges of the 21st century, will feature leading thinkers and practitioners.
Panelists will include: Dr. Ron Ferguson of Harvard University; Dr. Steve Paine, West Virginia's state superintendent of schools; Karen Cator, ; and Delia Pompa, Vice President for Education at the National Council of La Raza. Ray Suarez, senior correspondent with The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, has tentatively agreed to moderate this panel discussion. This promises to be an important and stimulating discussion.
The plenary session will likely address possible tensions between the need for personalization and the importance of 21st-century standards for success life, work, higher education and citizenship. Both issues have been central to discussions about the future of public education, but the two conversations seldom converge in ways that are helpful to practitioners.
